Tara-Jean Popowich Dance Workshop Day Two

A few more pics below highlighting a very exciting Day 2.  Started off with Vincent deepening our inner gangsta ninja!!  Later in the day he showed us how to Cha Cha Cha. We learned why Vincent is a master of ballroom.  Cha Cha is HARD!!!!!!!!!  but we had a lot of fun trying :p

We then had another treat with Tara-Jean.  This class lived up to all the expectations I’ve come to know from Tara-Jean.  There were tears , laughs, love, and some amazing dancing.  Tara-Jean sure has a special way of bringing the best out of her dancers and today was no exception.  I was especially happy with my student Juli Ohsada who was a stand out in this class and eventually went on to win a scholarship to Groove Street. Congrats Juli!!

Next was another crazy Alex Wong session. We continued our amazing routine from yesterday and then went in the COMPLETE opposite direction with a thrashy hard-hitting jazz number that left our heads spinning. Two of my students, the Seki sisters – Asahi and Takara – got “called out” by Alex for their stand-out dancing!  Takara went on to win a scholarship to the next Tara-Jean workshop.

A very fun and successful weekend for all and especially the Terpsichore Dancers!  Was very happy with them and I think they all had a great time! 🙂

Another big thanks to the beautiful Tara-Jean Popowich!  Can’t wait till next year 🙂

Mr. Dean’s little Secret for Getting Most from Dance Conventions.

As we are still in the middle of Dance Convention season, I thought it might be a good idea to write a bit about how you can prepare yourself for the best possible experience.  After all, the faculty you are taking classes from are some of the best in the business.  They have so much experience and knowledge to pass on to you!  Are you ready??

Here’s a little exercise I use with my dancers to help them prepare for a dance convention.  Before going to the convention spend a  few minutes thinking about the following question.  If you had the chance to ask a question to  one or more of the amazing all-star faculty, what would it be?  Try to come up with at least 3 questions.

Sometimes there are “question and answer” sessions and sometimes not. Most likely you won’t get the chance to ask your questions because there are so many people and the teachers are so busy.  So why bother ??

What I’ve noticed is that you most of these teachers share invaluable information in their classes.  They not only teach you steps and combos, but most of them have some great words of wisdom to share as well.  Sometimes we miss what they are saying for one reason or another.   We may be working on the combo or talking or whatever.  The important point to remember is that what they have to say is usually MUCH MUCH more important than the steps and the combo.

In conventions you’ll learn tonnes of steps and combos but you’ll only learn the experience and wisdom of that teacher ONCE!!  So it’s best you’re prepared to receive what they have to offer.  And how do you do that?  By getting your questions ready.

If you know before hand what you would like to ask, then you’ll be ready when the answer comes!!  Be alert! You never know where the answer will come from.

In summary, think of at least 3 questions. WRITE THEM DOWN and bring them with you to the convention.  have a look at them at least once a day. When you’re done the convention, take a few minutes to look at the questions and write down any answers that you may have heard. Who knows , someone may have just given you the secret YOU NEED to break through to the next level!!

Have any of you tried this? What has happened?  What are some of your questions?  Please comment on this post by clicking on the little comment bubble in the upper right corner!

Anticipating Tara-Jean Popowich’s Workshop with Video Memories

With the exciting Tara-Jean Popowich workshop right around the corner, I thought it might be a cool idea to share a couple of my favorite routines of the faculty.  I can’t wait to be with these ALL STARS this weekend in Lethbridge, AB.

I first met Tara-Jean at Harbour Dance Center in Vancouver.  I had just retired from my Cruise Ship Career and was set on getting back into the dance scene. I moved to Vancouver and bought a 20-class pass at Harbour Dance.  I took some lyrical classes from Tara Jean and loved them.

I remember her classes being very emotional. Almost like a spiritual experience.  I found her style very unique and her teaching skills quite amazing.  The way she was able to bring the best out of us emotionally was quite remarkable.  Her classes were definitely more than just a class. They were an experience.

I was not surprised when a few short months after I took those classes, that Tara-Jean went on to win So You Think You Can Dance Canada.  I was super happy for her and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. I’m SOOO looking forward to reconnecting and having some great dance experiences with her amazing faculty.

Hope to see you all there!! 🙂

Tap Dancing Workshop in Calgary: A Historical Weekend!

Finally some time to write about what was an amazing and historical weekend of tap dancing in Calgary.  It was two days of… wake up, tap, eat, tap , tap, sleep, !! I loved it! The mix of having four professional Calgarian dancers along with Lady Dianne Walker was just a dream!  I learned so much and was so happy to see such a great turn out!

It appeared that anyone serious about tap in Calgary, and beyond, showed up to the workshop!  It was a great turn out and I’m happy Tasha Lawson made such a great return to town! She put together a great line up which is exactly what the Calgary Tap scene needed.  And can we mention Dianne Walker!!

Wow!  This lady is like a tap “hall of fame” Star!  There is so much to say about all the wonderful moments that happened with Dianne this weekend but I think the most memorable was when she was brought to tears when talking about how happy she was that tap is in a good place and is all over North America.

Dianne shared with us how her generation of tap dancers literally saved tap dancing! Dianne’s genration, including Honi Coles, Buster Brown, Gregory Hines, Jimmy Slyde, and so many more, were actually a dying generation of tap dancers as tap was becoming “extinct.”   Dianne tells of how her mother’s generation were ALL tap dancing.  It sounded like tap dancing was then what yoga is today.  Everyone did it and everyone knew how!

Im not sure what caused the decline of the art form , but Dianne shares that they were desperately trying to save it in her day!  Dianne commented that one of the biggest catalyst to saving Tap was the love and passion of tap dancing from a young Savion Glover.  It was Savion who brought tap to the young people in a new and fresh way!  Dianne thanks God he did because she saw this weekend the result of all that effort they made back then.

It was very interesting to be a part of this weekend partly because of my good friendship with faculty member Lisa Latouche. Lisa and I have been friends for over 16 years  I was there when Lisa disovered that Tap Dancing was what she wanted to do with the rest of her life.  I would recieve messages from her telling me how amazing New York and Chicago are.

I watched and heard Lisa eat up all kinds of Tap Video including Savion Glover . And she mentioned many times how much she adored Dianne Walker. It’s been quite inspiring to watch Lisa follow her dreams and become one of the most successful Tap Dancers Canada has ever seen!

What a great weekend!  Definitely historical.  I can’t wait to be part of the next chapter!

Tap Dancing is Back in Calgary! Master Classes this Weekend.

Tap Dancing is about to get re-born in Calgary!!!  Calgary’s Most successful Tap Dancers plus Sarah Dolan and Tap Dance Legend Dianne Walker from New York are coming together for an insane workshop this weekend. You DO NOT want to miss this one!

Tasha Lawson is spearheading the event and is bringing up Lisa Latouche and Danny Neilson to join her all-star Faculty. Each has thier own remarkable resume in the field of Tap Dancing.  Lisa will be performing in Stomp here in Calgary quite soon!

And that’s just the appetizer. Perhaps the biggest treat for Calgarians is the first visit of Aunt Dianne!!  Dianne Walker is magic in Tap Shoes. Her love and enthusiasm for tap is nothing less that contagiuos and I promise you will fall in love with her just like anyone she’s taught all over North America.  She’s danced with all the greats and has sooooo much to offer!

The workshop is held at both DJD and The Edge this coming weekend.  The classes run all day and are garaunteed to change your tap life!  Check out the website below for all pricing and details!

Thanks to Tasha for putting this all together and for ressurecting Tap Dancing in Calgary!! See you There!!

Heather Cornell

One of the world’s most innovative and creative tap artists, Heather is known for her deeply musical approach to the art form of tap. An intuitive musician known for her impeccable time and emotional phrasing, Heather tours the globe performing, teaching and mentoring new tap communities.

Called “the Oscar Peterson of hoofing” (Globe and Mail, Toronto, Canada), Heather’s recent endeavors have been in creating music ensembles where she functions as the percussionist. Her newest show, Finding Synesthesia, a collaboration with pianist Andy Milne, and including vocalist Malika Zarra and cellist Dana Leong, is a textural journey where Ms. Cornell creates percussion with tap, sand, leather, a multi-tone shoe and most notably, her wooden taps, which is her instrument of choice. This show, touring venues like the Salzburg Jazz Festival and Toronto’s Harbourfront Theater, was commissioned by London’s prestigious Southbank Center and premiered at the London Jazz Festival in 2007. This project has become a textural playground for Milne and Cornell, as they constantly search to enrich their aural landscape, and to offer tap in an entirely new context.

Ms. Cornell co-created TapMotif with Thanos Daskalopoulos, a music/tap summit in Lefkada, Greece, where her concepts of training free thinking ÒbilingualÓ artists in music and dance are put into action. She has a new collaborative performing ensemble, CanTap, that brings together some of Canada’s finest tap dancers to inspire and create uniquely Canadian tap and music events. Their show, Deconstructing the Jazz Club, is remarkable in its ability to challenge the terms ensemble, soloist and improvisor, re-examing tap dance and it’s musical traditions. She is artistic director and choreographer for the acclaimed Manhattan Tap, one of the busiest music/dance companies in the world in the 90’s. This company provided the foundation for three generations of dancers like Max Pollack, Tamango, Roxanne “Butterfly”, Olivia Rosenkrantz and Chikako Iwahori, many who are leading the field today. Heather is a leader in making music based tap dance – both as an improvisor and choreographer, and was a pioneer in working with world music. She introduced this possibility to all of her students, apprenctices and compsny members in the 80’s and early 90’s, most who were still working out their connection to jazz music, and many of these dancers went on to define their tap careers in world music.
